Die-Cut Adhesives and Flexible Mechanical Fasteners Materials that bond, join, attach, and secure

What are Die-Cut Bonding and Fastening Components?

Custom die-cut bonding and fastening components are precision-cut parts made from pressure-sensitive adhesives and adhesive-backed mechanical fasteners that keep components secured during both processing and in finished assemblies. Custom die-cut parts are designed to be integrated directly into complex assemblies for easier handling, optimized throughput, and precise repeatable fit.

Why Die-Cut BOnding & Fastening?

The benefits of die-cut PSAs and Reclosable Fasteners

When compared to traditional mechanical fasteners and liquid adhesives, die-cut PSAs and adhesive-backed reclosable fasteners:

  • Enable precise bond-line control with clean edges and repeatable placement
  • Ensure consistent adhesive coverage across surfaces
  • Eliminate cure time and mess associated with liquid adhesives
  • Enable low-profile “no-show” bonding without drill holes
  • Increase assembly efficiency with peel-and-stick part presentation

The Role of a Precision Converter Why does choosing the right converting partner matter?

A preferred converting partner, like JBC Technologies, transforms these raw materials into customized parts that can be used and readily integrated into the production process. Think of a skilled converter as a facilitator, the one who engineers the converting process for maximum efficiency – whether that be through optimized part presentation, material yield, or vendor-managed inventory and SKU reduction. Any converter can make parts, but it takes a special converter to add value throughout your entire supply chain. JBC adds value through:

When Your Goal Is To...
Consider
Why?

Achieve low-profile Aesthetic bonding in tight-tolerance complex assemblies

Thin bonding tapes & adhesive transfer tapes - 3M™ thin bonding  tapes

  • Eliminates Bulk

  • Provides seamless, "no-show" aesthetic bonding for overlays, lenses, and thin substrates.

Replace mechanical fasteners & achieve lasting structural or permanent bonds under extreme vibration or stress

High-strength acrylic foams tapes - 3M™ VHB tapes, Tesa® ACXplus

  • Viscoelasticity of the foam core absorbs stress and vibrations without cracking the adhesive

  • Eliminates the need for drilling, welding, and other surface-damaging processes

  • Simultaneously bonds and seals out moisture, dust, and chemicals

Create secure bonds in chemically sensitive environments (outgassing)

Low VOC and low outgassing pressure sensitive adhesives - 3M 966 & 3M 467MC

  • Prevents fogging and contamination by minimizing compound emissions

  • Helps meet compliance standards in critical industries like aerospace and satellite applications

Bond two dissimilar substrates

Differential double-sided adhesives – 3M 9699

  • Different adhesive formulations on each side allow for optimized bonds for two different substrates

  • Prevents galvanic corrosion by limiting metal-to-metal contact

Bond low-surface-energy (LSE) substrates

LSE Adhesives – 3M LSE VHB, Avery Dennison LSE Acrylics)

  • Aggressive adhesive wet-out grip onto traditionally hard-to-stick low surface energy substrates

  • Eliminates the need for primers and pre-treatments

Enable tool-less access for modular designs or assembly aids where components must be swapped, repositioned, or removed

Adhesive-backed reclosable fasteners - 3M dual lock and Hook and Loops

  • High strength mechanical fasteners are easily opened and closed without losing attachment strength

  • Minimizes mechanical wear and maintenance time

Ask an Engineer: Bonding and Attachment Q&A

Pressure-sensitive adhesives are capable of bonding a wide range of substrates, including high-surface energy metals (aluminum, stainless steel, copper), engineered plastics (polycarbonate, acrylic), composites (fiberglass, carbon fiber), and flexible materials like foams, films, rubbers, and textiles.

Different substrates require different types of adhesion, making differential double-sided adhesives an important material for bonding two dissimilar materials together.

Yes, custom die-cut adhesive tapes are an assembly-efficient, aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional mechanical fasteners. High-strength acrylic foam tapes, like 3M VHB, are capable of withstanding great static and dynamic loads for structural bonding. Unlike screws or rivets, die-cut foam tapes evenly distribute stress, absorb vibration, and provide environmental seals against moisture and debris.

Acrylic foam tapes can be die-cut into custom shapes, resulting in clean, aesthetically pleasing bonding without visible screws, rivets, or other fasteners.

Die-cut adhesive-backed reclosable fasteners (like 3M dual lock and hook and loop) combine structural integrity with repeatable access. Compared to permanent fasteners, reclosable fasteners allow for:

  • Toolless access

  • Blind fastening

  • Easy repositioning and adjustment during assembly process

  • Temporary assembly aid attachment

Surface energy is a critical factor for adhering die-cut pressure-sensitive tapes. Surface energy dictates how well the adhesive “wets-out” or grips the surface. High-surface energy materials allow the adhesive to flow easily across the surface, resulting in a strong bond. Low-surface energy materials prevent the adhesive from evenly spreading, causing it to bead up. Specialized low-surface-energy adhesives, like 3Ms LSE line, have been created specifically to bond to low-surface-energy substrates like polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP).

Adhesive performance is driven by both material selection and application conditions—including the substrate type and surface energy, as well as choosing the right PSA chemistry for the application.

Equally important is surface preparation and environment: cleanliness (removing oils, dust, and debris), proper pressure and contact, and conditions like temperature and moisture all directly impact bond strength and durability.

JBC Technologies is proud to work with many different industry-leading adhesive suppliers when sourcing pressure-sensitive adhesives. JBC takes a vendor-agnostic approach to material sourcing, meaning we work with many adhesive suppliers to ensure you can source the material that’s best for you.

JBC is proud to be a 3M Preferred Converter, as well as a part of the Avery Dennison ADVantage network.
