Access to Hypoallergenic Fashion Tape Materials:

Through our many relationships with leading medical-grade adhesive suppliers, JBC helps you source, sample, and select the right differential tapes that meet the biocompatibility and adhesion requirements that skin-contact clothing tapes require.

JBC produces fashion tapes to meet customer-specified performance requirements, including:
  • Hypoallergenic daily 12-hour wear

  • Sweat and moisture resistance

  • Breathability and High Moisture-Vapor Transmission Rate (MVTR)

  • Low-profile garment alignment

  • Anti-creep adhesion and load-bearing stability

Do you have a question about how JBC can meet any of these fashion tape performance requirements?

Differential Vs. Double-Sided Tapes:

The material science behind a double-sided apparel tape

Fashion tapes are unique in that they are mostly always bonding to two dissimilar substrates simultaneously, requiring a specialized cast of differential double-sided adhesive tapes.

While double-sided tapes feature the same adhesive on each side of the carrier, differential double-sided tapes feature two unique adhesives optimized for bonding to different surfaces. In the case of fashion tapes, one side of the tape is optimized for biocompatible skin-contact, with the other side creating a secure bond to different clothing fabrics.

Here’s a quick head-to-head breakdown of differential versus double-sided tapes:

Double-Sided Tapes
Differential Double-Sided Tapes

When to use:

Bonding two surfaces with the same or similar surface energies.

Bonding two surfaces with dissimilar surface energies.

Commonly used for:

Non-skin contact attachment layer tapes in wearable devices.

Tapes that adhere to skin and low-surface energy materials like clothing fabrics (fashion tapes).

The Anatomy of a Clothing-to-Skin Fashion Tape

Functional tape consists of more than just an adhesive...

JBC Technologies understands the material science behind a typical double-sided apparel tape and leverages our process engineering expertise to manufacture functional final products based on customer-specified requirements.

The Liner

The liner is the protective layer that covers the adhesive until application. Since there are two adhesives in a differential double-sided fashion tape, there will naturally be two liners – one for the skin-contact side, and another for the fabric side. Release liners play an important role in how easily the finished product is removed, making low-release force an important functional requirement.

Skin-Contact Layer

The skin contact side of wearable fashion tapes requires a breathable, hypoallergenic adhesive that remains adhered during medium to long-term wear and removes without irritation. The key performance metrics to focus on here are balanced peel adhesion, high moisture-vapor transmission rate, atraumatic removal, and high shear strength.

The Carrier

Carrier films are the structural backbone of fashion tapes, providing a stable yet flexible substrate that holds each adhesive layer together. The carrier dictates the overall profile, durability, and “feel” of the finished component, providing the structure necessary for a converter like JBC Technologies to handle and die-cut the double-sided tape. Fashion tape carriers are typically made from thin, conformable films like nonwovens, polyurethanes, and PETs.

Clothing Contact-Layer

Unlike the skin-contact side, stick-to-apparel adhesives focus more on low-surface energy (LSE) bonding and residue-free removal, rather than breathability or gentle-adhesion.

Pull-tabs and Extended Liners

Pull tabs and extended-release liners are a critical functional element for user applications and experience. By kiss-cutting through only the carrier and adhesive layers, JBC can extend the liner to create an easy-release tab. This lets the end customer remove and apply the fashion tape product easily without having to touch the adhesive itself. Just peel, stick, and done!

Partner Effectively!

Working with a fashion tape manufacturer who has experience sourcing, combining, and processing dissimilar medical-grade material layers together is an important part of taking your apparel tape project to market quickly and confidently.

Not only do we have an extremely knowledgeable technical and process engineering team, but we also have tight relationships with the industry’s leading adhesive suppliers. Working with key suppliers like Avery Dennison Medical, Solventum, and DermaMed, we can ensure you have access to a wide variety of important fashion and clothing tape material information and samples.

The Role of a Converter:

Turning Rolls of Tape into Functional Products

These materials are the building blocks of a functional finished product, but without a converting partner, they’re just raw potential...

A vertically integrated U.S. based flexible materials converter like JBC Technologies is the key to getting the most out of your material. Using our broad manufacturing toolkit that includes ISO 13485 certified processes, multiple cleanrooms and state of the art cutting equipment, we leverage our three pillars of Engineering InnovationSupply Chain Optimization, and Manufacturing Excellence to ensure that you get quality products, optimized for performance and value.

Fashion Tape FAQ: Insights for Skin-Contact Apparel Tapes

Right here! JBC Technologies manufactures stick-to-skin fashion tapes through our multiple U.S.-based facilities. Working with a domestic converting partner like JBC Technologies to source your die-cut fashion tape components is a hedge against global trade instability, helping you avoid tariff costs and long overseas supply chains.

To ensure skin-safe adhesion and reliable, residue-free removal from fabrics, fashion tapes typically consist of a differential double-sided adhesive tape, with the skin-contact side typically consisting of a silicone adhesive and the fabric side, a high-performance low-surface energy (LSE) acrylic adhesive. The silicone side provides gentle, breathable, hypoallergenic adhesion to the skin, while the LSE acrylic adhesive successfully bonds to hard-to-stick textile fabrics without leaving unwanted residue upon removal.

These are not one-size-fits-all solutions, as every fashion tape project is unique. Through our many supplier relationships, JBC can help you sample different differential double-sided adhesives for real-world wear testing, ensuring you select the right adhesive before moving forward with full-volume manufacturing.

We specialize in custom-shaped fashion tapes, utilizing advanced multi-spindle rotary die-cutting to handle complex, multi-layered designs. Our high-capacity presses allow us to integrate value-added features directly into the manufacturing process.

JBC provides a wide variety of packaging solutions for fashion tapes, including boxes, tins, cans, sleeves, cartons, sachets, automation-ready kits, and more.

We also provide both retail-ready custom printed packaging and labeling/kitting for further post-processing.

Fashion tapes utilize differential double-sided adhesives to adhere textile fabrics like clothes or prosthetics to the skin to prevent wardrobe malfunctions or create a desired aesthetic effect.

Fashion tapes are double-sided tapes specifically designed to adhere textile fabrics on human skin, while beauty tapes are single-sided adhesives designed to mechanically lift facial tissue, or deliver active/passive ingredients into facial skin for cosmetic or dermatological reasons.
