The Advanced Capabilites that Make Up Our Medical Die-Cutting Toolkit

As a vertically integrated custom die-cutter, JBC's core expertise is in the process engineering behind how we convert flexible materials into precision medical parts.

These are some of the capabilities that allow us to achieve medical-grade precision that we will be highlighting at the show...

High Volume Rotary Die-Cutting

The medical and consumer wearable industries are no strangers to high volumes of intricate, multi-layered components. A diverse array of high-speed rotary die-cutting presses is a critical part of how we meet the needs of these demanding applications.

Our multi-station, servo-driven presses open up a world of in-line value-added opportunity, allowing us to laminate, slit, surface treat, and more, all on one press. The high number of spindles and in-line capabilities help us get more done in a single pass, yielding high volumes of complex medical components faster and more cost-effectively.

Inline Laminating

Multi-layer laminated components are a crucial way to pack more functionality in a smaller form factor. In medical manufacturing, multi-layer component stack-ups are not only the norm, but are often critical for functionality.

For instance, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) patch may consist of a release liner, a skin-contact layer, a sensor, and an attachment (or tie-layer) tape that secures the device itself. JBC's enhanced laminating capabilities make combining and cutting layers to shape seamless on one die-cutting press.

Slitting

Rolls of raw materials don't always come in standard widths. This can make processing and handling a challenge, as certain non-standard widths may not be optimized for die-cutting presses.

As a vertically integrated flexible materials converter, JBC can slit these master rolls into desired widths in-house, optimizing material yield while driving down manufacturing costs for the end-user.

Intricate Island Placement

For intricate bio-sensing and patient monitoring devices, the precise placement of small sensors and other functional design features can make or break a device's functionality.

JBC's intricate island placement capabilities allow us to precisely place a smaller, intricate element within a larger component. Completed in-line, island placement makes what would otherwise be a complex manufacturing process into an efficient, repeatable, and precise process.

Inline Vision Quality Systems

It goes without saying, but consistent quality within medical manufacturing is uncompromisable. Defects can wreak havoc on new product launch initiatives, production timelines, and more importantly, risk consumer safety.

As an ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 certified converter, JBC's commitment to quality informs every decision we make. A key part of this commitment to manufacturing excellence is our multi-camera inline vision system. Consisting of a good, better, best system, these cameras detect everything from missing part features to AI-driven "any-defect anywhere" detection.

ISO Class 8 Cleanroom Environments

For more stringent medical components with requirements like HEPA filtration, humidity management, temperature control, and static mitigation, cleanrooms are a must-have part of a converter's toolkit.

JBC Technologies is home to multiple ISO Class 8 cleanroom manufacturing environments, each with its own dedicated multi-station, high-volume rotary die-cutting press, and value-added inline capabilities like laminating, slitting, and island placement. ISO Class 8 cleanrooms typically benefit medical electronics, pharmaceutical, and consumer wellness components.

Wearable Medical Adhesive

Rapid Prototyping

Short- vs. Long-term Wear Stick-to-Skin Adhesives

arrow-right

How do you select the right pressure-sensitive adhesive for your stick-to-skin application? Balancing adhesion strength, breathability, conformability, and removability, along with end-use wear time needs - it can be tricky. Short-term wear stick-to-skin adhesives may need but a few minutes or a few days to be effective while long-term wear could mean as much as a month. Let's see some of the different applications for short- and long-term wear stick-to-skin adhesives and take a look at what medical device design engineers should consider when selecting carriers and adhesives for on-body applications.

Selection Criteria for Skin Contact Adhesives

arrow-right

Selecting a stick-to-skin (skin-contact) adhesive is different from choosing an industrial pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA). Unlike static substrates such as foam, metals, plastic, felts and foils, the skin is a living, breathing substrate. It is highly elastic and can change over time as cell cycles renew frequently. This post, prepared with the help of some of our vendor partners, examines some factors to consider when selecting a skin contact adhesive for your wearable medical device or health and beauty product.

10 Medical Uses for Differential Double-Sided Adhesive Tape

arrow-right

Differential double-sided adhesive tapes are a great way to bond two very different materials - think foam to glass or steel to plastic - and their versatility makes them a popular choice in industries like electronics and automotive. This two-faced approach to adhesive tape bonding makes differential tape the perfect choice for bonding two materials with significantly different surface characteristics. It's also the main reason you'd probably choose to use a differential tape in the first place. In this post, we turn our attention to some of the most common ways that you'll find differential adhesive tapes being used for medical applications.
